Increasing Value
Facilitated Strategic Thinking is a process for a CEO/General Manager and his or her management team to predict the future, identify current reality and connect the dots by fleshing out the critical issues that must be addressed. You will develop a clear path to success and develop confidence in your strategic direction. The timeframe for this depends upon the size of your team, the characteristics of the business and the environment you operate within. This process would yield a “strategic profile” which would identify the markets served, customer types, geography and products/services. Finally the critical issues to be addressed in order to achieve your strategy will be identified. This typically takes place in several meetings over a 1 to 2 month period. This is not necessarily an annual event. Strategy should change when a) you have new significant information such as the competitive environment or b) your assumptions about the future change.

Operational planning is the process that takes place after the strategic thinking has been done. How will things get done? This involves the consultant working with the executive team members to flesh out how their area of responsibility will support the critical issues. This typically involves several meetings culminating in a presentation for the CEO for approval. The focus is on supporting the strategy and aligning the different areas of the business. This typically takes place over a 4 to 8 week period.

One-on-one strategy reviews can be effective for a CEO to walk through his or her vision, assumptions, strategy, plans, critical issues, core competencies and ability to execute. Sometimes a survey tool will be employed. This is primarily a diagnostic and assessment process rather than a strategy development process. Our belief is that strategy development should be done in a collaborative, team environment unless it is a very small firm.

Customized strategic solutions are sometimes necessary, building upon the processes identified above. Organizations are all in different places with regard to their development and execution of strategy. This would typically first involve a brief discovery project to identify the current situation and a proposed solution.

Strategic Dialogue is a form of executive coaching that focuses on the executive’s agenda. It is lonely at the top and only an egotist or a fool would try to go-it-alone. You need someone to talk to in a confidential setting who is empathetic, but will also push you a bit. Applied Strategy clients prefer to work with a coach who has significant executive experience. Todd Ordal is not only a seasoned executive but also an experienced coach and graduate of the College of Executive Coaching. We would typically meet 3-4 times per monthsometimes in person sometimes by phoneto resolve strategic issues, help you gain confidence and allow you to think more deeply about a wider range of issues than is possible in the hectic day-to-day existence of a CEO.
